3D Room Planner - Specialmoves
We’re not all talented interior designers, nor do we have hours to scour the shops for the perfect sofa. That’s why the team at Mydeco set out to revolutionise the way we shop for our homes, and where Specialmoves came in to create a 3D room planner: a unique take on room decoration. The tool won the E-consultancy Innovation Award 2008, an FWA award, and IMA and BIMA nominations.
MyDeco aims to take the pain out of decorating and furnishing our homes. We were given the daunting task of allowing users to visualise and purchase their perfect room, from millions and millions of different combinations of products. The result? The MyDeco Room Planner.
A complete amateur can create a floor plan matching any room in their home, and decorate it floor to ceiling in furniture and features chosen from over 3 million in MyDeco’s database, each accurately depicted in 3D.
Furniture can be moved around, rooms knocked through, windows put in and walls painted in mere clicks. Then the newly minted Sarah Beenys can generate pictures of their designs to share with friends or simply print out and mull over.
None of this was easy. User research was a key part of the process; surveys were carried out, representative users interviewed and existing products tested. We also worked very closely with client stakeholders to really get to the bottom of what they wanted the tool to do, whilst constantly refining visual design and user experience throughout development.
The result was a tool which perfectly treads the line between freedom and simplicity. It was recognised by the industry through multiple award wins and nominations, and has continued to help people design beautiful homes since 2008.
